In Light and Shadow We Rotate

Time and the bell have buried the day,
The black cloud carries the sun away…

…After the kingfisher’s wing
Has answered light to light, and is silent, the light is still
At the still point of the turning world.

-from Four Quartets, by T.S. Elliot

Lighthouses can be considered as portals between space and time. “In Light and Shadow We Rotate”, is a site-specific multi-media installation by American artist Abby Sohn. Abby continues to apply her methods of employing aspects of communicationash-point-lighthousen systems in innovative ways by extending the function of tools used in maritime navigation in relation to specific sites along the South Wales Coast.

“In Light and Shadow We Rotate” explores relationships between sites and histories through ritual. Research into the sites of Nash Point and Caldey Island Lighthouses has not only revealed navigational connections but has also uncovered spiritual relationships. The work integrates sounds, photographs, and film to relay a rhythmic interplay between the two lighthouses and their surrounding locations providing the audience with a separate space for reflection at the Nash Point Lighthouse.

A preview was held on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 8:00pm-9: 30 pm at the Nash Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse sounded the diaphone foghorn at 8pm to open the event. The work was on view in the tower of the Nash Point Lighthouse from September 6th to September 20th.
